Each generation has a choice to make...
I was born three days after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. My brilliant mother, who escaped the Jim Crow South to attend graduate school — first in Oklahoma and then Upstate New York — decided that I was old enough at five months, packed us up to move west. October 1968, California here we come! (If you are reading this, and we ever meet, ask me about Guam addition in this story.)
I recently shared on social media Russell Vought’s deliberate stance to cause trauma for an entire generation as abhorrent and inhumane. I am grateful for the halcyon days of my youth, my incredible education and teachers to whom I will forever be indebted, and my parents who created spaces and opportunities for this happy baby to grow, explore, be curious, and seek joy. Which led to my life's work; to better understand and bring people together/to connect through our shared culture and history. What information have we/are we imbuing the current generation from which to make choices moving forward?
In gratitude. Onward, with boots on!
